1. Croatia — Best Overall
Croatia's Dalmatian coast is Europe's most popular sailing destination for good reason. A string of over 1,000 islands offers endless variety, the sea is calm and warm, the infrastructure is excellent, and Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar are world-class destinations.
- Base from: Split or Dubrovnik
- Best for: First-timers, families, groups
- Season: May–October, peak July–August
2. Greek Ionian Islands — Best for Beginners
The Ionian Sea (Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos) is calmer and more sheltered than the Aegean — ideal for first-time charterers or families. Emerald water, white sand beaches and excellent charter bases make this consistently popular.
- Base from: Lefkada (no ferry needed — connected to mainland by bridge)
- Best for: Beginners, families, calm-water sailing
3. Greek Aegean — Best for Experienced Sailors
The Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos, Paros) and Dodecanese offer more challenging sailing with stronger meltemi winds in July–August. Stunning scenery, iconic white-washed villages, and a serious island-hopping culture.
- Base from: Athens/Alimos, Rhodes
- Best for: Experienced sailors, photography, island-hopping
4. Mallorca & Ibiza — Best for Long Weekends
The Balearic Islands are accessible from the UK in under 3 hours and offer a different flavour of sailing — lively marinas, party atmosphere if you want it, or quiet coves if you don't. Day and weekend charters are widely available.
5. Turkey (Aegean Coast) — Best Value
Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye offer exceptional value compared to Greece and Croatia. The "Blue Voyage" (Mavi Yolculuk) sailing routes along Turkey's Turquoise Coast are stunning and significantly cheaper than equivalent Greek itineraries.
Croatia vs Greece: Croatia wins on infrastructure, nightlife and accessibility. Greece wins on scenery, island variety and food. For a first-time charter, Croatia is more beginner-friendly. For a bucket-list trip, the Greek islands edge it.
