Why the Norfolk Broads for a VRBO Holiday?
The Broads is genuinely unique — there's nowhere else in England quite like it. The landscape is flat and wide, the skies are enormous, and the pace of life on the water is something you can't replicate anywhere else. VRBO waterside properties put you right on the rivers and broads — some with private moorings where you can tie up a hired boat.
Best Locations on the Broads
- Wroxham: The 'Capital of the Broads'. Excellent boat hire, great base for exploring north Broads.
- Horning: Beautiful village on the River Bure. Swan Inn, excellent pub lunches by the river.
- Potter Heigham: Access to the northern broads including Hickling — biggest broad in Norfolk.
- Acle: Central location, good for both north and south Broads.
- Loddon & Beccles: South Broads — quieter, less touristy, beautiful Waveney Valley.
Combining a VRBO Property with a Boat
The classic Norfolk Broads holiday combines a waterside VRBO cottage with a day boat or week-long cruiser hire. Day boats from Wroxham, Horning and Potter Heigham cost around £80–£120/day and need no licence. Week-long cruiser hire starts from around £600 and sleeps 2–12 people. Many VRBO properties have private moorings.
Wildlife and Nature
- Bitterns boom at dawn on the northern broads (Hickling, Barton, Horsey)
- Swallowtail butterflies — found only on the Norfolk Broads in the UK
- Marsh harriers quarter the reed beds throughout the day
- Otter spotting is possible at dawn and dusk on quieter stretches
- Grey seals at Horsey beach (accessible from the Broads)
