Tenerife's Different Faces — Where to Stay
- South (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Las Américas): Guaranteed sunshine even in winter. Beach resort territory — best for sun and pool holidays, families and those wanting nightlife.
- North (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava): Greener, cloudier, more cultural. Older-style Canarian architecture, botanical gardens, cooler temperatures. More authentic feel.
- Anaga Rural Park (northeast): UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — ancient laurisilva forest, dramatic ravines, tiny villages. Extraordinary hiking. Very few tourists.
- Teide National Park area: Base yourself at altitude (1,800m+) for access to Mount Teide and the best stargazing in Europe.
Year-Round Appeal
Tenerife's greatest asset is the climate. The Canary Islands sit in the Atlantic trade winds system and maintain temperatures of 18–22°C year-round in the south. January in Tenerife averages 20°C — ideal for those escaping UK winters. This makes Tenerife VRBO rentals excellent value in off-peak months when European mainland destinations are closed for winter.
Rural Tenerife — The Undiscovered Side
Most UK visitors never leave the south coast resorts — which means rural Tenerife is remarkably undiscovered. VRBO casas rurales (rural houses) in the Anaga, Teno and Güímar regions offer a completely different experience: local wine, fresh fish from village restaurants, hiking through ancient forest. Prices are significantly lower than the south.
