Renting a yacht sounds intimidating. It isn't. Every year, millions of people with zero sailing experience book yacht charters — the key is knowing which type of charter suits you. Here's everything a first-timer needs to know.

    The Two Main Charter Types

Skippered Charter — The Beginner's Choice

A skippered charter comes with a professional captain (skipper) who handles all the sailing. You sit back, explore the sea, swim, eat, and enjoy the boat. No experience needed whatsoever.

Bareboat Charter — For Qualified Sailors

You're in charge of the boat. You'll need a valid sailing qualification (RYA Day Skipper or equivalent) and usually a logbook of sea miles. Not for beginners, but significant cost savings and freedom.

First Time? Go Skippered. If you've never sailed before, book a skippered charter. You get all the experience and none of the responsibility. A good skipper will also show you around the local waters, find hidden beaches, and recommend the best restaurants.

What Size Boat Do You Need?

    Group SizeRecommended Boat
    2–4 peopleSmall sailing yacht (30–40ft)
    4–8 peopleMid-size sailing yacht or catamaran (40–50ft)
8–12 peopleLarge catamaran or motor yacht
12+ peopleMultiple boats or large motor yacht

    What's Typically Included?

    • The boat itself and fuel for the base passage plan
    • Skipper (on skippered charters)
    • Safety equipment (life jackets, flares, etc.)
    • Basic kitchenware and bedding

Usually NOT included: food and drink, marina fees, fuel for extra miles, the "APA" (advance provisioning allowance) for running costs on crewed yachts.

    Best Destinations for First-Timers

    • Croatia — calm seas, beautiful islands, excellent infrastructure
    • Greek Islands — Ionian (calmer, beginners) or Aegean (windier, adventurous)
    • Turkey (Bodrum, Marmaris) — good value, warm waters, excellent food
    • Mallorca / Ibiza — shorter charters possible, good for a long weekend

    When to Book

Peak season (July–August) in the Med books out months in advance. For the best availability and prices, aim for June or September — the weather is still excellent, prices drop, and popular spots are less crowded.
