Before You Leave: The Non-Obvious Packing List
Everyone remembers bedding and towels. People forget:
- A doorstop. The single best tool for meeting neighbours in halls. Prop your door open during freshers week and people will just walk in.
- Paracetamol, ibuprofen, and antihistamines. You will not want to find a pharmacy on your second day.
- Extension lead with USB ports. Halls have approximately two sockets per room.
- A folder and some basic stationery. You'll get paperwork on day one.
- Your NI number, passport, and bank details written down somewhere accessible. You'll need all three faster than you expect.
- One week of food. You'll be too overwhelmed to do a proper shop immediately.
The First Week: What Nobody Warns You About
Freshers week is brilliant and overwhelming in equal measure. The thing that catches most people out is that the first week doesn't reflect what uni actually is. Everyone is performing confidence. Many people are quietly terrified. The friends you make in week one might not be your closest friends by year two — and that's completely normal.
Go to things even if you don't feel like it. Say yes to the first invitation. You can always leave after an hour.
Money: The Mistakes Made in Week One
- Buying a full set of textbooks before your first lecture. Wait until you know which ones are actually used.
- Freshers fair impulse subscriptions. Sign up to free stuff, ignore the paid trials.
- Eating out every meal because you haven't sorted cooking yet. Even basic pasta and sauce is worth learning.

Almost everyone feels it, most people don't say anything. The peak is usually around week two or three when the novelty fades and the reality of being away from home sets in. It passes. The things that help: keeping a routine, getting outside every day, cooking something you ate at home, and calling family on a schedule rather than reactively when you're feeling low.
