We ranked family ski resorts by what actually matters to parents — kids' club quality, crèche availability, gentle green runs in safe areas, and whether the resort is walkable with young children. Not by which ones look best in a brochure. Here's the honest result.
What Actually Makes A Ski Resort Family-Friendly?
The number one mistake families make when booking a ski holiday is choosing a resort that their adult friends recommend for skiing — without checking whether it works with children.
The five things that actually matter for families:
- Ski kindergarten / kids' club — dedicated children's areas with small patient instructors
- Crèche availability — for children under 3 or those not yet skiing
- Ski-in ski-out or short transfer — getting children in full ski gear to distant lift stations is exhausting
- Gentle progression terrain — wide easy blues and greens well away from fast intermediate traffic
- Village safety and walkability — low-traffic villages where children can move around safely
Under 3s
Need crèche facility — most resorts have them from 18 months. Check availability and book immediately.
Ages 3–6
Ski kindergarten with dedicated children's instructors. Look for magic carpet lifts and enclosed beginner areas.
Ages 7–12
Group ski school with peers. They'll progress fast — ensure the resort has growing terrain to match their ability.

Best Family Ski Resorts 2026
Morzine / Les Gets, France
Portes du Soleil · 1,000m – 2,460m · Linked resorts
Morzine and Les Gets are neighbouring resorts within the Portes du Soleil and together form the best family ski destination in France. The combination of excellent English-speaking instruction, proper crèche facilities from 18 months, dedicated children's areas, and a traffic-calmed village makes this the complete family package.
Les Gets specifically has a dedicated children's ski area — the Chavannes plateau — which is enclosed, gentle, and away from faster intermediate traffic.
Méribel, France
Les Trois Vallées · 1,450m – 2,952m
Méribel sits in the heart of the Trois Vallées — the world's largest ski area at 600km. This makes it perfect for families where adult skiing ability varies significantly.
Crèche booking tip: The best crèches in family resorts are booked months in advance for February half-term. Book your crèche place the same week you book your holiday — before flights, before accommodation.
Courchevel 1650 (Moriond), France
Les Trois Vallées · 1,650m – 2,740m
Courchevel 1650 has the best infrastructure specifically for very young children. The village nursery slopes are directly accessible from the accommodation, the crèche facilities are premium, and the Village des Enfants is genuinely outstanding.
4th — Alpe d'Huez (For High Snow Certainty + Families)
Alpe d'Huez combines the best ski school in France with high-altitude guaranteed snow. For families worried about a low-snow year, the 3,568m glacier means conditions are reliable regardless of season. The dedicated children's area sits near the village centre.
5th — Westendorf, Austria (Best Budget Family Resort)
For families looking for an excellent experience at half the French price, Westendorf in the Austrian Tyrol is outstanding. The dedicated SkiWelt Kinderland children's area is one of the best in Austria, and the traditional Tyrolean village is charming and genuinely walkable.
Family Ski Holiday Checklist
Before You Book — What To Check
Crèche availability — Call and confirm availability for your exact dates before booking anything else.
Ski kindergarten ages — Most start from age 3, some from 2.5. Confirm minimum age for your child.
Walk to lifts — Ask specifically: 'Can we walk from our accommodation to the lifts without skis?'
Child ski hire sizing — Pre-book children's hire. Ill-fitting boots are uncomfortable and dangerous.
Helmet hire for children — Helmets are mandatory for children in most resorts.
Travel insurance covers children — Including helicopter evacuation. Non-negotiable.
Children's lift pass age rules — Many resorts offer free or heavily discounted passes for young children.
How Much Does A Family Ski Holiday Cost?
A family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children aged 6 and 9) skiing for 7 nights from the UK in a mid-range French resort for February half-term 2026:
- Flights (4 people regional UK airport): £600–£900
- Self-catering apartment 7 nights: £1,200–£2,000
- Ski and boot hire (all 4, pre-booked): £350–£500
- Lift passes (adults full week, children often discounted): £800–£1,100
- Children's group ski lessons (5 days): £300–£450
- Travel insurance (family policy): £80–£150
Total range: approximately £3,330–£5,100 for a family of 4 — or around £830–£1,275pp. This is the honest number.
Money-saving tip: Children under certain ages ski free on the lift pass in many resorts — Trois Vallées offers free passes for children under 5. This single fact can save £200–£400.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age can children start skiing?
Most good ski schools take children from age 3 in ski kindergarten. Some will take children from 2.5 years. Under 3s are generally too young for skiing and should be in a crèche. By age 4 most children can join beginner group lessons. By age 7–8 most children progress quickly and will be on blue runs by the end of a week.
Is February half-term really the best time to take children skiing?
It's the most convenient time for UK school families but not the best. January (when kids have a week off around New Year) offers the same resorts at 30–40% less. If you can take children out of school for a week in January, the money saved is substantial.
Should we get private or group lessons for children?
Group lessons work well for children aged 6+ where learning alongside peers is motivating. For children under 6, private lessons with a patient, experienced children's instructor produce faster and less frustrating results.
Do we need travel insurance when skiing with children?
Yes — without question. A child ski injury requiring helicopter evacuation and hospital treatment in France can cost tens of thousands of pounds. A family travel insurance policy with full ski cover costs £80–£150. Do not ski with children without it.
