The Colosseum is the world's most iconic ancient monument — and it has some of the world's worst queues. In summer, walk-up waits of 3–4 hours are not unusual. Book through Viator to skip the entire queue, access the arena floor where gladiators fought and go underground into the hypogeum.

Arena Floor vs Standard Entry — What's the Difference?

Standard entry gives you access to the first and second tiers — great views of the arena from above.

Arena floor access lets you walk on the wooden floor where gladiators actually fought — standing in the centre and looking up at the 80 arches is genuinely goosebump-inducing. Strongly recommended.

Underground (Hypogeum) access takes you beneath the arena floor into the tunnels where gladiators and animals waited before being raised up through trapdoors. Only available on specific tours — limited numbers.

💡 Pro Tip: Book the first tour slot of the day (typically 9am) — the Colosseum opens at 9am and the first 30 minutes are dramatically less crowded than the rest of the day. The golden morning light on the travertine stone is also stunning for photographs.
