Bareboat Charter
A bareboat is a yacht rented without any crew. You're responsible for sailing, navigation and safety. Think of it like renting a car — you're the driver.
- Requirements: Valid sailing qualification (RYA Day Skipper, IYT Bareboat or equivalent) plus logbook
- Cost: Cheapest option — no skipper fee
- Freedom: Maximum — go where you want, when you want
- Best for: Qualified sailors who want independence
Skippered Charter
A skippered charter comes with a professional captain who handles all the sailing. You're a passenger and guest. The skipper handles navigation, docking, anchoring and everything else nautical.
- Requirements: None — zero experience needed
- Cost: Skipper fee typically £100–£200 per day extra
- Freedom: Still high — you choose the route together, skipper advises on conditions
- Best for: Beginners, families, groups who want to relax
Crewed Charter
A step up from skippered — a full crew including captain, chef and possibly a steward. Typically on larger yachts (50ft+). The most expensive option but also the most luxurious.
The Middle Ground — Flotilla Sailing: A flotilla is a group of bareboats sailing together, led by a lead crew boat. The lead crew provides daily briefings, help with navigation and support if anything goes wrong. Good for sailors with some experience who want a safety net.
