Dubai is unusual among long-haul destinations: the airport sits inside the city, the roads are excellent and the Metro runs directly from two terminals. That makes DXB one of the easier airports to leave — provided you land at a sensible hour and are not travelling with a family's worth of luggage. Here is every option from Dubai International and Al Maktoum, and when each one makes sense.

Your Options at Dubai International (DXB)

    🚇 Dubai Metro (Red Line)
Stations inside Terminals 1 and 3, running along Sheikh Zayed Road past Downtown, Business Bay, Marina and JBR. Air-conditioned, spotless and quick.
    🚕 Airport Taxi
Metered, plentiful and available 24/7 from the official rank. The default for most arrivals, especially with luggage.
    🚐 Pre-booked Private Transfer
Fixed price, meet and greet in arrivals, vehicle sized to your group. Best for families, groups and red-eye landings.
    🏨 Hotel Shuttle
Many Dubai hotels run their own airport transport — always ask before booking anything else.
    🚗 Car Hire
Straightforward driving and cheap fuel, but Salik tolls, valet-only parking and multi-lane interchanges catch first-timers out.

    Taxi vs Metro in Dubai

The Metro is the standout budget option and, for Downtown, Business Bay or Marina, often the quickest at rush hour. The catch is threefold: it does not run all night, luggage space is limited, and most hotels still need a short taxi ride from the station at the far end. In peak summer that final walk in forty-degree heat is not trivial.

Taxis are metered, regulated and everywhere, and for a two-person trip to Downtown they are painless. Where they get less appealing is on a family arrival at three in the morning, or a run out to Palm Jumeirah or Jumeirah Beach Residence, where the meter keeps ticking through traffic. A pre-booked transfer fixes the price before you travel and puts a driver in arrivals with your name — the difference is mostly about certainty rather than speed.

🏆 Sento Golden Tip: DXB has three terminals and they are a long way apart — Terminal 2 is on the opposite side of the runways from Terminals 1 and 3, with no walking route between them. Most UK flights land at Terminal 3 (Emirates) or Terminal 1, but check your terminal and put it on the transfer booking.

    Which Option Suits You?

    👨‍👩‍👧 Families & Groups
Private transfer. One vehicle, one price, child seats on request and no hauling cases onto the Metro.
    💼 Business Travellers
Metro to Downtown or Business Bay in the daytime; executive transfer if you need a receipt and a guaranteed pick-up.
    🎒 Solo & Couples
Metro if you are light and arriving in Metro hours, taxi otherwise.
    🌙 Late-Night Arrivals
Taxi or pre-booked transfer — the Metro does not run through the small hours.

Tips for Booking a Dubai Transfer

    • Confirm DXB or DWC — Al Maktoum is roughly an hour from the city and handles a growing share of charter flights.
    • Ask your hotel about its own shuttle before booking anything separately.
    • Request a larger vehicle for four-plus passengers — standard Dubai taxis are tight with holiday luggage.
    • Check flight monitoring is included so a delayed long-haul arrival does not void your booking.
    • Keep the voucher offline — screenshot it before you fly rather than relying on airport wifi.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Dubai Metro go to the airport?

Yes. The Red Line has stations inside Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, running through Deira, Downtown, Business Bay and out to the Marina. It does not run 24 hours, so check the timetable against your landing time.

How long does it take to get from DXB to Downtown Dubai?

Typically 15 to 25 minutes by road outside rush hour, and comparable by Metro once you factor in walking at each end.

Are taxis at Dubai Airport metered?

Yes, official airport taxis are metered and regulated. A pre-booked private transfer gives you a fixed price agreed in advance instead, which suits longer runs to Palm Jumeirah, Marina or Abu Dhabi.

What is the difference between DXB and DWC?

Dubai International (DXB) sits inside the city and is served by the Metro. Al Maktoum (DWC) is south of the city, around an hour by road, with no Metro link — pre-booking a transfer there is strongly recommended.

Can I claim compensation if my flight to Dubai is delayed?

Flights departing the UK, or operated by a UK or EU airline into Dubai, can fall under UK261/EC261. See our flight compensation guide for what qualifies.
